How to have a safe and natural Halloween with kids!

Pumpkins, Ghost, and Witches...Halloween is almost here! As we have fun dressing up in costumes it's important to remember that a lot of the accessories, clothing and decor sold on the market is far from being safe for us. Here is a short list of ideas on making this halloween safe from chemicals and other nasty stuff!

Face Paint

Tests conducted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that many contained heavy metals like lead and chromium.

Glowing Green and Safe:

Instead try this 100% natural face paint from Wee Can Too, Made from Organic Fruit & Vegetable powders!

Nail polishes

Whether you’re going as a princess or a witch, the matching polishes are often filled with frightful endocrine-disrupting phthalates and volatile toxins like toluene.

Glowing Green and Safe:

You don't need to give up the fun polish colors for that finishing touch on your costume. Instead try these super Halloween colors from the awesome and super safe brand Piggy Paints. Non-toxic and even made in USA! Say good-bye to harsh, smelly chemicals and hello to Piggy's as Natural as Mud®! They have awesome colors from Orange to Green and even Glow in the Dark!

Often costumes bought from the drugstore or Halloween store are full of nasty chemicals, starting with the fabric itself and even down the bag it is packaged it. You can smell the fumes from throughout the store.

Glowing Green and Safe:

Get creative and make a homemade costume with clothing you already own or from an outfit that can be re purposed as everyday clothing. We love this Alice in Wonderland dress, just add a few simple accessories and voila you can go from a cute regular dress to Halloween costume! For babies there is no reason to put them in a stuffy, polyester costume, instead try a super soft comfy organic romper with a Halloween inspired print like this Black Cats romper from Winter Water Factory.

Turn this cute organic dress into this fantasy costume, just add white tights a black headband and this adorable pinafore from Etsy shop MaryLabarr.

Little babies don't need complicated costumes, keep it comfy and trendy with a Halloween theme outfit like this black cat romper.

Trick or Treat! Get a deal on any of these find in our store with code SPOOKY for 15% off your entire order.

How to Choose the Right Pillow for Your Toddler

Once your baby becomes a toddler, you might start thinking about using a pillow. There are lots of reasons pillows are a good idea for toddlers: they can help positioning, which is especially useful for wriggly children, they provide a comfortable resting place for your little one’s head, and many toddlers enjoy snuggling down to sleep on their pillow, with some finding comfort in carrying their pillow around and cuddling it for comfort during waking hours, too.

For some cute organic pillow options check out the selection at Wild Dill, from the line 100% Brouk.

cuddly toddler pillow

When choosing a pillow, the most important consideration is what it’s made of. Look for a pillow which uses breathable cotton and natural fabrics, rather than synthetic materials. Natural fabrics are usually more gentle on a toddler’s delicate skin and have a lower risk of allergies and irritation. Many toddler pillows are flatter than adult pillows, and you may prefer to start your toddler with a flatter pillow to begin with. Naturepedic has a really nice classic white, organic cotton pillow option.  Available at Nest Bedding.

Safety is also key; it’s important to note that, due to risk of suffocation and SIDS, pillows are not recommended for children under two years of age. Before two, babies and young toddlers should sleep without a pillow, and you should also avoid keeping toys and other objects in their cot or bed with them for the same reasons.
